O:PAIRS is a worldwide initiative to establish a strong base of clinical evidence on the ex vivo preservation of kidneys for transplantation. Sponsored by Organ Recovery Systems and led by eminent physician-scientists, O:PAIRS comprises three independent landmark outcomes trials. Each follows a naturalistic study design, separating pairs at recovery to compare patient outcomes from machine-perfused versus static-stored kidneys. Each targets immediate and delayed graft function as primary endpoints and longer-term graft function and survival as secondary endpoints. Each will deliver the rigor possible only in a large, prospective, randomized, controlled, powered clinical trial. And each exclusively features the award-winning, easy-to-use LifePort Kidney Transporter.
Results from the landmark Machine Preservation Trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2009 demonstrated for the first time that use of a LifePort can reduce the odds of experiencing a delay in recovery of kidney function by 43 percent. In addition, these kidneys are 48 percent less likely to fail within a year compared to those stored in the traditional box of ice.(i) These results build upon those from retrospective studies showing that machine preservation improves the quality of a kidney from a cadaveric donor prior to transplantation in comparison to those stored in a cool box.(ii) (i)Moers C, Smits JM, Maathuis M-HJ et al.
