Research Perfusion Program
Life in Balance

Organ Recovery Systems envisions a future where innovations in science and technology are linked to balance the disproportion between organ supply and demand. We created an organ research program to engage organ recovery organizations in this endeavor.

Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) play a vital role in our research and development efforts, as they provide the organs that allow us to conduct research focusing on improving organ preservation technology. In return, we hope our program allows OPOs to offer donor families another opportunity to expand the capacity for healing when donation for transplantation is not possible. We understand families donate organs with the intention of helping someone in need. By participating in our research perfusion program, OPOs may extend a family's gift to help multiple patients in the future.

Through this program, we receive viable organs that have been deemed non-transplantable and otherwise would not be used clinically. Some examples of the research and testing performed in our lab include:

  • Testing of preservation solutions;
  • Development of preservation methodologies;
  • Determining the limits in warm and cold ischemic times;
  • Development of hypothermic and normothermic preservation models;
  • Review of organ resuscitation methods; and
  • Drug absorption, effectiveness, toxicity, and interaction while organs are being preserved.
